We're here again...FINALLY!

Ni sa bula vinaka!

The two photos above were taken by Ben Cavu when he visited Vasara in 2006. The tree on the top is the vunivutu at Vasara (apparently it is over 100 years old). The tree at the bottom is the frangipani tree on our great-grandfather Paula Cavu's yavu in the village. It is also very ancient (about 60 years old).

Current Fiji news:

- With great sadness we share the news of Aunty Litia's (Tua Ilaisa's eldest daughter) passing 3 months ago. Aunty had been sick for a while from cancer and died after a short stay in hospital. Aunty Litia's 100 nights was held at her farm in Waila last Saturday (28th June 2008). Uncle Paula and Ben attended and in his email uncle wrote: "It was a wonderful and peaceful experience for me to be amongst a small group of young people, the members of the Nazarene Church. Litia was truly a practising Christian and lovely person who really cared for others in a very honest way. We represented the Cavu family as aunty Jackie was not well."

- It is also with great sadness that we announce the passing of aunty Emma Osbourne, mother of Betty, Joe, Ilaisa (junior), Babs and David. Aunty Emma passed away on Monday morning, 40th June 2008 at Lautoka from breast cancer. We will be going from Suva to Sigatoka on Saturday morning to attend the funeral.

I apologise for the long silence on this blogsite - it has been unbelievably hectic especially at work! However, here we are again and we look forward to your comments and news as well. I will be making more postings next week.

From the 'wide-angle lens,' if you log on to Fijilive.com you'll see the latest on Ono-i-Lau. There has been some discussion that Ono is now considering 'moving' to be a part of Tonga. After the bose-ni-yasana last week, Anare Jale and his supporters who were barred from the meeting have requested that this matter be given serious and immediate consideration by the interim PM. Watch this space...

Faye and Babs en route to Lomaloma

Just a little peek at the Cavu girls en route to Lomaloma! They have better pics I'm sure but here's a little 'taste' of the long-awaited trip!
Far left (top to bottom): Faye Senico in the bus from Nadi to Suva on Sunday 16th March 2008. The world suddenly became a much smaller place when Aunty Ateca from the US (middle) bumped into Babs and her 2 children, Jade and Keanu (from Sydney) in downtown Suva! Luggage, cartons, biscuit buckets, you name it - for the trip to the village.
Left (top to bottom): David Cavu (Faye and Babs' brother) 'having a few' with his brothers-in-law, TuWaqa on the left (Toko and Emosi's big brother) and Emosi (Babs' partner) on the right. Jade (closest to camera) and her cousin, Faye's daughter, Lydia inflight from Sydney-Nadi. A trauckload of kerosene drums and fuel arrives to be loaede on board for the village.
Faye, Babs and David - in that order of seniority - are Uncle Ilaisa Cavu's (Tua Netani's son) children. Both sisters live in Sydney and met their life partners in the same family; the brothers Toko and Emosi Senico. The only missing child in the photos is Faye and Toko's eldest son, Navi. Both the mothers and the children were going to Vanua Balavu for the first time. The trip has been planned for a while and is being made primarily to return Mr. Luke Senico's ashes to his village as his final resting place (RIP). The Senico siblings along with their partners, spouses and children gathered in Suva on March 16th -20th with their close cousins and family to make the trip to Lomaloma on Good Friday. They are due to start returning to Suva this weekend.
Have a great weekend!

Sa Malo!!

Many thanks to Veitinia (Sydney, Australia) and aunty Ateca (US) for your comments and pledges of support for the dinner fundraiser. I will also pass your good wishes on to the family at our next meeting. The dinner will be held on Friday 11th April here at the Central Cuisine restaurant, Suva.
We'll keep you updated.

Meeting at Laqere for aunty Litia's (nee Cavu, Tua Ilaisa's eldest daughter), reguregu

Left: Ben Cavu turning to beam a smile at the camera and above, Mo listening intently.
Right: Jackie, Theresa and aunty Marama catching up before the meeting started.

Left: Aunty Fatafei Jiko Luveni at the meeting for aunty Litia's reguregu.

On Monday 17th March, the Bukani mataqali met at Laqere to collect the traditional items required for presentation and an 'envelope' for aunty Litia's reguregu which was held at Nepani, the home of her (late) first husband, unlce Tavite and children. Aunty Litia died suddenly on Thursday 13th March after a short time in hospital. We understand that she had throat cancer, but her death may have been related to diabetes. It was with much sadness that we gathered and then made our way down to Nepani. Aunty Litia was buried at the Nasinu cemetery and is survived by her husband, Kali and her children, Alena, Toni, Ilaisa and Odila.

Cavu meeitng III 2008

Thank you Lupeti for taking these photos!
Below: Ben Cavu, uncle Paula's son and grandson of Tua Lepani listens intently despite the heat to the discussion. Above: Mrs. J. T. Koroi, takes a breather during the meeting.
TO ALL OF OUR RELATIVES : I have been asked by the Cavu committee to 'spread the word' that our fundraising drive for completing the two homes at Vasara is kicking off with a Chinese buffet dinner at the Suva restaurant 'Central Cuisine'. There have been 400 tickets printed and each family has been tasked with selling 20 tickets each. For all of our relatives abroad, could you please support us by sending in the cost of the number of tickets you nominate to buy and we'll make sure that those of us who are not as 'comfortable' as others make use of the tickets with their families? I will upload the bank account number in the next couple of days, The dinner will be held on Friday 11th April from 6 - 10pm.
Cost: $20.00 (FJD) / ticket
The minutes for the third meeting appear below. Please note that we have made enquiries about using solar energy for the Vasara homestead and this cost will also be met by the fundraising events that are planned for the year. The overall objective is to complete all renovations and the solar energy installation by the time we go over for Christmas this year.
Another very important reminder: For all those who wish to make the trip to Ono at the end of this year, please submit your names and those of your family members who wish to go as soon as possible. All fares must be paid by Novemeber 2008.
Fares: $230.00 (return)
Boat: SUILVEN or WESTERLAND
Dates: 19th December 2008 - depart for Ono
2nd January 2009 - return to Suva
If there are any changes to these arrangements I will inform you all as soon as I hear of them. Could I also please ask everyone to send in your comments regularly so that I can see how accessible this site is? We haven't heard from our US relatives in particular and we know we have a very sizeable Cavu-descendant community up there!

Faye on a good day!

Hiya! For those of you who haven't seen Faye (now Senico, formerly Cavu), Uncle Ilaisa's (Lautoka) eldest daughter, here she is saying 'Hi' from Sydney where she lives with her husband Toko and three children, Navi, Lydia and Caleb. A family photo would be nice next time Faye! Please send your photos to me by email (JPEG or GIF) and a short biodata paragraph so I can upload them for general viewing since we are now literally 'all over the world' - this is an ideal opportunity to 'meet' each other in virtual space since quite a few of us have not met in person.
Till later,
theresa.

Update on Massage therapy for Aunty Emma

Ni sa bula again,
In January I mentioned that after the visit to see aunty Emma at Sigatoka, we would keep you updated about the massage therapy to be administered by aunty Finau (Pu Mate's niece) from Valelevu.

On Monday 28th January amidst the heavy rain and gale force winds, mum and I dropped aunty Finau off at the Coral Sun bus at the Holiday Inn (Suva) at 4pm. Betty was waiting for her when she got to the Warwick and by the time I rang to check that she'd arrived safely on Moday at around 7.30pm, she was massaging aunty Emma's hand. The therapy lasted four nights (as is the tradition) and offered some relief for the most part. However, aunty Finau is back here in Suva and will be going to see aunty Faye to explain the situation and to see whether or not anything more can be done from the conventional western medicine perspective.

End of update.
theresa.

Ilaisa Cavu (Sigatoka)
Peniasi Cavu
Netani Cavu
Mike Cavu
Pio Vuntiuraga
Meli Cavu
Jackie Yavala
Theresa Koroi
Laite Cavu - Secretary

2.0 Welcome
2.1 The Chairperson welcomed all present to the meeting and apologised that the minutes of the first meeting held at Tamavua last year were not available.

3.0 Treasurer’s Report
3.1 Jackie Yavala took members through the Report that was presented at the Committee meeting at Pikeu Street on 05/01/08.

3.2 The current balance is $197 and subscriptions for 2008 were now due.

4.0 Constitution
4.1 Uncle Paula enquired abut the absence of a process for electing office bearers

4.2 Ilaisa suggested that there be a representative form each family in the office bearers.

4.3 Uncle Paula explained that when there was a mix of young and older people the younger members would feel obliged to agree with recommendations made by elders.

1.1 Ilaisa supported the suggestion that the process of election be included in the Constitution. All members agreed.

1.2 It was raised that traditionally the eldest in the family should head the family, following which concerns were expressed over Bubu Una’s health. The Chairperson explained that Paula had asked her to take on the role as he was the Turaga ni Mataqali, and she had accepted.

1.3 It was suggested that vasu in the family tree were to be included as part of the Cavu family. Netani supported the motion and Uncle Paula seconded. All members agreed.

2.0 Vasara
2.1 The Chairperson explained the maintenance required at Vasara and that a quick fundraising was required. A new water tank was needed to service the new flush toilets and bathrooms.

2.2 The concrete water tank was no longer there and although Uncle Lagi had built a new one, an additional tank was needed for the house.

2.3 Ilaisa suggested that quotations be sought so that a realistic amount could be set to fundraise towards. Families needed to budget their income and it would be easier if they knew how much contribution would be required.

2.4 Uncle Paula said that both suggestions could be done. A soli be done while awaiting quotations.

2.5 The Chairperson explained that Vasara was an example to all in Ono and because of her pride in it she had been using her own money to ensure its upkeep.

2.6 Ben said that a carpenter would need to take measurements etc for the quotation. The Chairperson replied that Netani knew what needed to be done and could do the work required.

2.7 Uncle Ilaisa said that if the goal for 2008 was to install a water tank then we must work towards it, give what we could, and work together. This was supported by Aunty Litia.

2.8 It was agreed that there be a minimum contribution of $100 per family.

3.0 Trip to Ono-i-Lau
3.1 Uncle Paula reported that Roko Tui vakacegu mai Serua had been making arrangements for the charter of a boat for a direct return trip to Ono.
· MV Suilven – 500 people at $230 per person return
· MV Westerland – 300 people at $200 per person return

3.2 These boats were clean and comfortable and it was calculated that $5 per week from now to November would add up to the full fare. He added that it would be good if the young family members went on the trip as the experience would help them develop an affinity for the place and enable them to decide their future commitment to it.

3.3 The Chairperson said that regular contributions towards the fare should begin now so that all fares could be paid by the end of the year. The fare for adults and children were the same and all names of those going should be submitted.

3.4 The Chairperson requested that quotations for the charter of a plane be sought also.

4.0 Education Assistance
4.1 The Chairperson reported that two members of the Cavu family had received assistance for courses at FIT. Netani undertook a four week course on fibreglass boat building and Lavenia undertook a computing course.

5.0 Executive Committee
5.1 The Chairperson apologised that the Committee had not run very well in 2007 due to the unavailability of members. She suggested that new office bearers be elected. The current members are:
President/Chairperson - Mrs Jokapeci Koroi
Vice-President - Metani Cavu
Treasurer - Jackie Yavala
Secretary - Laite Cavu
Vice-Secretary - Lupeti Fihaki
Members - Ben Cavu, Meli Cavu, Jone Cavu, Netani Cavu (Tamavua), Mike Cavu

5.2 The Chairperson suggested that as Laite had a very demanding job that she may wish to take a break and suggested Paula Cavu (luvei Netani) take over.

5.3 Uncle Ilaisa suggested that the current Committee continue and this was agreed to by members.

6.0 Other Matters
6.1 Uncle Ilaisa and Aunty Litia offered to pay for the water tank for Vasara and this was agreed to by members.

6.2 Uncle Paula asked that the family tree be updated particularly for the inclusion of names of the young children

6.3 The postal address for the family is PO Box 14950 Suva, which is Aunty Jackie’s postal box.

6.4 The Chairperson assured members that the Committee would perform better this year.

Mum, (Mrs. Koroi), aunty Marama Cavu and I went to visit aunty Emma in Sigatoka last Saturday. We took with us some fresh fruit and the well wishes of those in Suva that weren't able to make the trip. Aunty Emma has been diagonised with breast cancer and has had one mastectomy. Subsequently she has opted for Fijian herbal remedies and appears to be making a comfortable recovery. Later this week we hope to have her in Suva for some massage therapy administered by Pu Mate's (Cavu) niece Finau in Valelevu. We will keep you updated. Hope all is well out there and please feel free to post your comments on this site.
